BREED HISTORY

Alabai, or Central Asian Shepherd Dog (also known as Turkmen Wolf Killer or Tobet) is one of the largest and most ancient breeds of dogs. Its history is simply fascinating, and leads one to believe the words wolf killer are accurately attributed to the breed. The body of the wolf killer is solid and sizable, but muscular and proportionally built. To put it in simpler terms, the Central Asian Shepherd is just the perfect large dog.

Alabai is one of the oldest breeds of dogs - a typical molossus dog Molossus (dog) - Wikipedia. It was formed as a breed of folk selection for more than 5000 years on a vast territory stretching today from the Caspian Sea to China and from the Southern Urals to Afghanistan. This breed contains the blood of the oldest dogs of Tibet, shepherd dogs of various nomadic tribes and war dogs of Mesopotamia, it is closely related to the Mongolian Shepherd Dog and the Tibetan Mastiff. Due to minimal human intervention and the great role of natural selection dogs are distinguished a good health, inherited during the weeding out of weak representatives of other breeds.
Fearless Alabai, boldly engaging in battle with wolves, coyotes and jackals without thinking twice.
During its existence, Central Asian Shepherd Dogs were used mainly to protect livestock, caravans and the owner's home, undergoing strict natural selection. However, their main job is to guard and protect herds of sheep in the high mountains and steppes of Asia. A few dogs can do it even without people (Shepherd) at all for months. They are so smart that they know the path and the number of endless sheep herds. Their main food is a wolves and other predators who tries to kill “their property” a sheep. This is what they eat guarding sheep for a months. Femail Alabai female should kill minimum 2-3 wolves in a fight, and male should defeat a minimum of 5. Otherwise, they don’t do their job well and shepherd should kill the dig.
Difficult living conditions and constant struggle with predators formed the appearance and tempered the character of this dog, made it strong, fearless, taught to spend energy economically and extremely intelligent and independent. As an owner of many breeds, I had before I consider Alabai the smartest breed. Ironically, I wish some people had such a level of understanding and intelligence.
The large habitat of the Central Asian Shepherd Dog gave it several alternative names:
          1. Uzbek "buribasar", translated as "Wolf killer”.
          2. Turkmen "Alabai", hinting at the variegated ("ala") color and richness ("bai") wool cover.
          3. Kazakh "tobet", noting the peculiarity of tracking a grazing herd ("dog on the top of a hill").
In Turkmenistan, purebred Alabay, along with horses of the Akhal-Teke breed, are considered a national treasure and are even banned from export from the country by since 1990'S.
